I am a champion of The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People. As a result, I have completed a Master’s degree, am respected by my colleagues and I almost never eat anything that smells like nail-polish remover. The Seven Habits teach us to examine our priorities, put our lives into perspective and expand our Circle of Influence such that we are able to create positive change in our lives. Every few months I re-read the Seven Habits and consider how they have played into my personal growth.
Being proactive means taking responsibility for your circumstances. I find it pretty easy. It’s like having the guts and foresight to buy a pregnancy test if you've been having unprotected sex for a while. Or simply checking out the nutrition information on the back of your box of Poptarts.
Not only am I proactive, but I also refuse to be subjugated or have my feelings or schedule controlled by outside forces. For example, I proactively complain to others. When it is cold, I put on thermal underwear. I went to the eye-doctor the other day and had an eye exam. I brush my teeth so that they will not fall out. I proactively let friends and family know when I’m going to be late for a gathering and, as a result, if they are unhappy about it, they have only themselves to blame.
